As a child he suffered from fatigue, fevers, and suspected asthma. At age twelve he moved to Nantes, where his uncle worked in the faculty of medicine. In 1816, Laennec was consulted by an overweight young woman with heart symptoms. Unwilling to place his ear directly on her chest, he recalled the acoustic principle of hearing a pin scratch through a piece of wood. He rolled a quire of paper into a cylinder and found he could hear the heart's action clearly. This led him to build a hollow wooden cylinder, later refined into three detachable parts with a funnel-shaped cavity. He named the instrument the stethoscope, from Greek words for 'chest' and 'examination.'

Laennec became a lecturer at the Collège de France in 1822 and professor of medicine in 1823. His final appointments were head of the medical clinic at the Hôpital de la Charité and professor at the Collège de France. He died of tuberculosis on 13 August 1826 at age 45, after going into a coma.
